June 14, 2015 - A Perfect Idaho Day
Yesterday, Garrett drove Jack, Blake and I up to Cascade, Idaho to spend the afternoon fishing. We left at 5:30 AM, and stopped to take lots of pictures along the way.
I have always driven through Cascade to go to other destinations, but this was the first time I stopped and explored the area. Cascade is located in the Boise National Forest. That is 2.5 million acres of gorgeous Idaho all around. There are 9,600 miles of rivers and streams, scattered with 15,400 acres of lakes and reservoirs, and beautiful mountains with elevations of up to 9,730 feet. In other words...so many recreation areas to explore!
The town of Cascade is adorable. Jack and I have decided that we definitely want to move there in 2017 when it comes time to buy a home. I can't imagine living anywhere else. It is only 1 1/2 hours to Boise. Even Blake thought he would love to live in Cascade as well.
Our plan was to go to Horsethief Reservoir to do our fishing. The problem is, there is no marker for the turn onto the road leading to the reservoir other than a tattered old street sign. So we missed it, and ended up driving for miles until we stumbled upon Warm Lake. Warm Lake is gorgeous! We ran into a park ranger at Warm Lake who said the fishing had not been great, so we headed back to Horsethief.
Horsethief is stunning. The boys put a blanket under a tree for Miss Lilly and I, and they went out on the dock to fish. The weather was perfect, breezy and sunny. Miss Lilly and I enjoyed a picnic, and watching all the wildlife on the edge of the water. There were hawks and Bald Eagles flying overhead too. It was truly an awesome day.
By the time we doubled back to Horsethief, it was pretty late in the day for good fishing, so the guys were not catching anything. Just before we were ready to leave, a lady fishing next to Blake put a worm and a marshmallow on his fish hook. He cast it out, and seconds later hooked a gorgeous 14 1/2 inch late trout. We were so happy that he caught a fish. We brought it home, and I baked it in the oven. It was delicious!
We can't wait to go back. Next time we will do an overnight camping trip, and bring Casey, Brandon, Amber, Cooper and Penny. That would be the perfect trip! :)
Some photos from today...
A stop along the Payette River at sunrise.
Along the drive we noticed a beautiful pond with fog hovering just above the water. A gorgeous spot for pictures. A beautiful Idaho sunrise!
This is Warm Lake. A gorgeous spot in the mountains for camping and fishing. They even have a swimming beach.
Beautiful Horsethief Reservoir.
Until next time...enjoy life, and be kind to one another.
Peace.

We drove past hundreds of acres of burned forest from the Yellow Pine forest fires a couple of years ago. Lightning sparked fires burned over 35,000 acres in Idaho that year.
Some video I made of the day. :)
My Beautiful Idaho!

June 12, 2015 - Hello Little Hens
My hens are getting so big! It is hard to believe they are just 10 weeks old, but still have a lot of growing to do.
We enjoy spending several times a day in the garden with them, and they are really enjoying their new chicken coop too.
Here are the latest pictures of my girls.
The lovely Thelma...
Miss Annabelle...
and Rosie. :)
And the most effective way to remove chicken shoulder poop you ask?
The Gatorade Cooler Dump! As you can see, Blake's shoulder is all better. :)
Miss Lilly, watching her boy from a safe distance.
Until next time...enjoy life, and be kind to one another.
Peace.

June 9, 2015 - Summertime Heat!
It has been so hot this week. Our highs are approaching 100°f, and with very low humidity, it is hot!
My biggest challenge has been keeping my little hens cool. I have filled a cooler with ice, and blow a fan through it to their run. I have also been feeding them frozen corn and peas, and putting lots of ice in their water. Letting them out of their run several times a day to flap their wings helps too. So far so good.
We are almost done with the coop too. After it cools down this evening, I will plant some mint, lavender and strawberry around the coop. Then all that is left is for Garrett to finish the siding, Jack to create a shaded roof for the run, and for me to decide whether or not I want to paint it. I sort of like the rough look of it. Using all reclaimed and recycled wood, it has a very eclectic look about it. I may leave it natural, or paint the trim white. Either way it is an awesome coop, and I love it!
I finally got to talk to my Nana in Texas today. She hardly ever answers the phone anymore, so I usually end up speaking to the staff to be sure she is okay. And my auntie Rita checks on her too. Aunt Rita and I speak at least once a week so we can keep each other up to date on how Nana is doing. Nana sounded wonderful this morning, very cheerful and happy, and she remembered who I was. The last few conversations we had, she was very confused, and the last batch of photos of the boys and grandchildren that I sent her, really confused her. She kept saying that she had no clue who all those people where? :'( Bless her heart. She still remembers me though, and that makes my heart happy. <3 She is 96 years old now..
Some photos from my world...
Garden #1 is growing great! My special, home-made bug spray has been working wonderfully. I still have all my seedlings for garden #2 to plant.
Blake, staying cool the only way he knows how.
The most delicious water in the world is garden hose water. :)
The diva, keeling an eye on her chick chicks.
Annabelle and Rosie.
Miss Thelma.
The lovely Annabelle. They all have the softest feathers, and are getting so big. I love my hens!
Peace.

Jack, working on the coop today. The large orange cooler is full of ice, with a fan blowing cool air into the coop. He is working on my planting boxes in front of the coop.
My yard looks amazing! I am very proud of my little back-yard farm. :)
***UPDATE*** And the little planter boxes are finished! I planted apple mint, strawberries and lavender.
I LOVE it! Thank you Jack. :)

June 3, 2015 - Chicken Coop Update
Jack had the day off yesterday and today, so he and the boys worked hard on my chicken coop and run. They got so much done!
We still have to finish the siding, paint, trim and decorate, but most of the coop and the run are done...YAY! Oh and build the nesting box too.
I let the hens spend the night in their new home tonight. I hope they do okay. I have actually set my alarm for 7:00 AM so I can check on them, and let them out of the coop.
Here are some photos from today...
Miss Lilly was so nervous about her boy Blake using the high powered staple gun. She kept a very close eye on him.
Miss Lilly assisting as always. :)
Until next time...enjoy life, and be kind to one another.
Peace.

Spending their last few moments in their old cage.
My guys are so awesome! Garrett, for coming up with the idea for backyard chickens. Jack, for designing the coolest chicken coop. Blake, for loving this new hobby as my as I do. And all three of them for working so hard to make my yard and garden look amazing.
This has been the best family project we have ever enjoyed together. I love you guys!
Until next time...enjoy life, and be kind to one another.
Peace.
